FORMER York City boss John Askey was sacked as manager of Hartlepool United on Saturday night.

Following a poor run of form, Vanarama National League outfit Hartlepool have made the decision to part ways with Askey, with the Poolies currently finding themselves in 17th position of the division.

Hartlepool have struggled to adapt to life back in non-league after last season’s relegation from Sky Bet League Two, sitting just four points clear of the relegation zone and just two points ahead of York in the National League.

With that in mind, chairman Raj Singh has made the decision to part ways with Askey and assistant manager Mark Goodlad after just ten months in charge.

Askey had accumulated a win ratio of 29.3 per cent in that time, with Hartlepool winning just four matches since the start of September, one of which came in a 3-1 victory over City in mid-November.

It also comes after a six match winless run, following back-to-back defeats to Oldham Athletic across the festive run of fixtures.

The club will make an update on their interim management team in due course, with the search of Askey’s successor to begin imminently.

It’s the second time in just over a year since Askey has been removed of his post, having departed York in November 2022 in controversial fashion.

Askey told BBC Radio York that former City chairman Glen Henderson had forced him to stand by the printer and collect his own P45 form, despite leading the club to promotion from the Vanarama National League North the year prior.

City had beaten Boston United 2-0 in the play-off final to reach the National League, with the Minstermen steadily performing before Askey’s dismissal.

The Hartlepool club statement read: “Hartlepool United can confirm that the Club have parted ways with manager John Askey and assistant manager Mark Goodlad.”

“Chairman Raj Singh stated: ‘This decision wasn’t an easy one to make, but we feel it’s necessary following our recent downturn in form.

‘We thank John and Mark for their efforts during their time at Hartlepool, and wish them the best of luck for their future endeavours.’

“A further update on our interim management team will be made in due course.”
