A FORMER York City winger is now a free agent, despite only leaving the Minstermen last September for an undisclosed fee.

Alex Hurst, who joined Macclesfield in the Northern Premier League in late September, has departed the Silkmen following their play-off final defeat.

A 2-0 loss to Marine in the Northern Premier League play-off final meant that Macclesfield will remain in the seventh tier, with Hurst now parting ways with the club.

As announced in the club's retained list, Hurst is on the look out for a new club, despite only joining the Silkmen eight months ago.

Hurst had joined York in their debut season in the Vanarama National League in the 2022/23 season for an undisclosed fee from Port Vale, going on to make 38 appearances in the league.

The 24-year-old netted two goals in his time in North Yorkshire, before exiting the club under former manager Neal Ardley.

Hurst began his senior career with Matlock Town following his release from Crewe Alexandra, impressing the Gladiators in a trial period, before impressing in a spell with West Yorkshire outfit Bradford (Park Avenue).

His impact with the Avenue saw the winger earn a move into the EFL with Port Vale, where he would go on to make 21 appearances for the Valiants.

After falling out of favour in his second season with Port Vale, Hurst was allowed to make the move to City, re-uniting with manager John Askey, whom he had played under at both Port Vale and York.
