SELBY Town manager Ryan Cooper will be targeting a play-off finish with the Robins in the coming season, after agreeing to stay on in charge of the first team.

Cooper took charge of Selby last season after a spell as player, and helped guide the Robins to a mid-table finish in the Northern Counties Eastern League division one.

The Town boss is looking forward to pre-season and the upcoming campaign, as Selby look to improve on a tenth place finish last season.

“I think it’s going to be a good challenge.” Cooper told the club media team.

“With regards to the coming season, little will change in terms of how we go about business.

“I think it’s all about all of us moving in the right direction and trying to do the right things for the club.

“It’s a real honour for myself and Nige [Nigel Danby, first team coach] to continue managing the club and looking ahead, we’d be stupid not to aim for promotion, but our main objective is getting in the playoffs at very least and see where we go from there.

“Both me and Nige are excited to have the opportunity and stamp our mark on the squad.”

Cooper is looking to evolve his style of play into the new season, and explained the effort going in behind-the-scenes to help improve the squad.

“As you’ve seen from last season, regarding our style of play, we were a bit open when we took charge, particularly at the back.

“We have since instilled a lot of effort to become more solid and we’ll continue this hard graft in playing some attractive football moving forward in the coming season.

“We’ve obviously started our pre-season work and the lads have all come back and are looking in good shape considering they’ve had six weeks off. We’ve also a few lads on trial and we’re bringing in a few new faces to the current squad which we’re looking very strong.”

“Despite the early stages, our boys are showing good levels of fitness in part to the fantastic work James has begun with them.

“They’re certainly raring to go for July 4th, for our pre-season opener against Scarborough which will be a good test with them being in the National League North.

“We’ve got some good pre-season friendlies coming up after which we’re confident will put us in good stead for the new season.”
