A RAMPANT first-half display saw York City brush aside National League strugglers Woking 4-1.

Four goals in 16 minutes saw the Minstermen collect a welcome win with Richard Brodie, Yan Klukowski, Jake Wright and Aidan Connolly all on the scoresheet to cancel our Gozie Ugwu’s early opener for the visitors.

After Jake Caprice had hit the roof of the David Longhurst Stand from 20 yards, Woking forged in front on seven minutes following a Clovis Kamdjo blunder.

The recalled midfielder dallied and lost the ball in his own half, allowing Charlie Carter to send Ugwu clear through the right channel with one pass.

Debutant keeper Kyle Letheren’s first touch for York City then saw him picking the ball out of his net after being beaten low to his right by Ugwu’s clinical 12-yard finish.

But the Minstermen were on level terms within two minutes as Brodie fired a thumping, edge-of-the-box effort into Woking keeper Michael Poke’s bottom-left corner.

Klukowski was just as emphatic on 13 minutes when he made it 2-1 with a 30-yard bullet into Poke’s bottom-right corner following Connolly’s short pass.

A third home goal followed after 20 minutes when Brodie’s cross-shot from the right touchline was tipped over by Poke.

Connolly delivered the resulting left-wing corner and Matt Fry’s downward header was forced over the line from a yard by Wright.

The on-loan Sheffield United striker went on to turn provider when, after Joey Jones surrendered possession in his own penalty box, he squared for Connolly to tap in with only Poke to beat in the 25th minute.

A breathtaking half also saw Klukowski go close with a 20-yard free kick after Kieran Murtagh was booked for fouling Connolly, who also tested Poke from 20 yards before the break. Woking improved after the interval with Fabio Saraiva heading over from Nathan Ralph’s left-wing cross and Zak Ansah somehow clearing the crossbar following an almighty scramble in City’s six-yard box.

More harassing from Wright, meanwhile, created a chance for Brodie which was pushed behind by Poke.

Shortly before departing the action, Brodie then headed off the line after Jones had rose highest to meet Max Kretzschmar’s corner.

Kretzschmar’s angled ten-yard attempt was then comfortably collected by Letheren before Scott Fenwick’s firm 20-yard drive was parried away by Poke.

Subs Chike Kandi and Charlie Penny also had further poorly-executed opportunities for the visitors, while Saraiva went closer with a deflected 20-yard attempt.

Reece Thompson also forced a near-post save late on, before Letheren was at full stretch to keep out Saraiva’s edge-of-the-box effort.
