MALTON & Norton Golf Club star Emma Brown claimed her sixth York Union of Golf Club's Ladies' Championship after setting a new women's course record at Scarthingwell.

Brown birdied the first hole but dropped three shots on the outward nine to turn at two over par. Another dropped shot at the 11th was followed by three pars, then three birdies from the 15th before another dropped shot at the last.

This left her with a one-over-par 73 for the round, comfortably ahead of club-mate Carol Simpson in the runners-up slot.

Most women found it difficult to score on the day, and Val Eccles (Forest Park) was surprised to find herself collecting the silver division trophy after a round that included triple and quadruple bogeys. A birdie at the last helped to complete her nett 73.

Judy Frame (York) collected the runner-up prize after handing in a 78, with Carol Wilson (Malton & Norton) just behind on 80.

The bronze division trophy was reclaimed by Lorraine Ellis (Forest of Galtres) who won the trophy two years ago.

Despite starting with a triple bogey, there were no more disasters for her during the round, and her nett 72 was good enough to finish ahead of Rachel Connor (Malton & Norton) on 74, with Emma Kilvington (Forest of Galtres) third on 81.

Organisers hope that, although there was a small field for the competitions, more women will turn out for the Aldwark Trophy (betterball stableford) at The York Golf Club on August 11.

Meanwhile, forecast rain never arrived during the York Union's Reed Trophy and Senior Championship at Forest of Galtres GC but gusting winds did make the going hard.

The Reed Trophy for golfers above 18 handicap, delivered the best score of the day – 42 points from Colin Crocket playing on his home course.

Andy Goodall (Sandburn Hall) was second five points behind, edging out club-mate M KcKeon on countback. David Fern (Scarthingwell) with 36 points was fourth.

The Reed had been won for the last two years by David Ridley, who, no longer qualifying for that competition, competed in the Seniors Championship, finishing a creditable 15th, four points behind the winner.

The trophy was won by Trevor Bardy (Aldwark Manor) with 38 points.

Joe Barrett (Sandburn Hall) had earlier posted 37 points, with five others later matching that tally but none able to better his 20 points on the back nine.

That quintet were Paul Armstrong (Pike Hills), Dave Robinson (Fulford), Adrian Hodges (Pike Hills), Andy Watt (Malton & Norton) and Geoff Salter (York).

The York Union has again had to cancel the Junior Stableford that was rearranged for August 3 as that date clashed with a club’s Junior Open. It will now be included in the calendar for next year.
