HEROICS by York RI duo Tasmin Putt and Freya Wilde were not enough to send Yorkshire women into the final of the women's rugby union County Championship as they lost 12-10 to Lancashire.

Both teams were previously unbeaten this season and the game, at Barnsley, promised to be close - the Red Rose sealing their place at The Stoop next weekend thanks to a late try.

The RI duo, turning out for the White Rose for the fourth time this season, combined to give their side a 10-7 half-time lead, Putt scoring two tries set up by Wilde.

The score remained that way until deep into the second half when Lancashire scored a breakaway try.

On the restart, Yorkshire had a player sin-binned, and their hopes faded.

York RI Ladies are on the lookout for new players of all abilities. They train throughout the summer on Tuesdays from 7pm to 8.30pm at RI's Hamilton Drive ground. Anyone interested can go down or email yorkriladies@gmail.com for details.
