DEFENDER John McCombe is delighted to be taking centre stage for York City.

The Pontefract-born 30-year-old has started the last two games in the middle of a back three, having been selected for his first fixtures this season following Dave Winfield's suspension.

Winfield has largely filled that position following his recall from a loan spell at AFC Wimbledon in March with McCombe ending last term on the left side of defence.

As a natural right-footer, he looked uncomfortable in that role during pre-season, though, with first Stephane Zubar and then Femi Ilesanmi preferred for that job by manager Russ Wilcox once the campaign kicked off.

But, commenting on his current station at the heart of the back line, McCombe said: "I'd probably say it suits my game a bit more. It can be a bit hard being out on the left although I don't mind playing in any of the three roles really, or in a back four, because I'm just happy to be out there on the pitch again."
