MALTON & NORTON RUFC moved effortlessly into the second round of the Yorkshire Shield after a six-try 35-0 trouncing of West Park Leeds.

The visitors played some top drawer rugby but the penalty count at the breakdown is a worry heading into the new Yorkshire One season.

Malton forged in front on 15 minutes when West Park had no answer to a maul in the home 22 and second row Jamie Rounthwaite was credited with the touchdown.

West Park briefly pressured the Malton line from the kick off but clean ball from a set scrum saw the ball quickly fed to full back Zweli Sodladla, who burst through the home defence and raced to halfway before handing on to centre Ian Cooke to finish off the move in the corner.

Sodladla added the extras.

Malton's pack were in command of both lineouts and scrums and, on the half hour, that dominance paid dividends.

A penalty kick to the corner set up the position and a catch at the back of the line by Ali Coe was the platform for the pack to set up another drive. Once again Rounthwaite was the man to get the touchdown and extend the lead to 17-0.

But, with issues at the breakdown, Malton had two players sinbinned for constant offending.

After the break, Sodladla slotted a penalty to further extend the lead and, midway through the half, Malton struck again.

Substitute hooker Lewis Welch stole the loose ball after a West Park lineout and battled his way forward before handing on to second row Sean Emms whose barnstorming run along the touchline left a couple of defenders in his wake.

When he was eventually stopped, the rest of the pack quickly piled in to drive skipper Sam Triffitt over for his first try.

Malton then withdrew some key players to avoid injury but the quality of their play did not suffer.

With ten minutes left, a quick tap penalty by scrum-half Paul Angus was swiftly passed through the hands of several players for Triffitt to again cross.

In the final minutes Cooke got his second score after Triffitt made ground following a scrum.
