YORK CITY boss Russ Wilcox has tabled a bid for Frickley striker Reece Thompson.

The forward capped a fine display against Newcastle United with a stunning goal as the Minstermen beat their illustrious Premier League opponents 2-1.

Wilcox revealed he is trying to do a deal to bring the 21-year-old to Bootham Crescent – and has also indicated he will offer former Scunthorpe youth-team captain Taron Hare a contract as well.

"It's a great finish," said Wilcox of Thompson's goal. "We are very interested in bringing him to York City and I will have to have another word with the chairman.

"He gives us something different. Vadaine Oliver was terrific in the air as well and he plays on the shoulder of people. If you look through the squad, maybe we have not got that type of player.

"The other side to his game is his work ethic without the ball, which is always important, so he did very well.

"He wants to come to York City. Whether we can do that deal is another matter. We have put a bid on the table to Frickley and we are waiting to hear their response. After his goal, who knows?"

Wilcox added about the importance of doing a deal quickly: "We are trying to do that. It was always a difficult one because you want to have another look but you don't want people doing what they did with (Danny) Johnson.

"They don't have to do any work on him and it is 'I'll just go and watch him play against Newcastle'.

"We have done all the spade work. I have watched him play at Frickley and, hopefully, we will be rewarded by Reece coming and signing for York City."

On Hare, the Minstermen manager added: "I hope to sit down with him and offer him a deal. It has got to fit the budget.

"He is a bit more of a developmental type of player. He is a player I have watched progress at Scunthorpe. He has a great desire to want to be a footballer."

Wilcox said of his side's display: "I am delighted with the squad and 5,400 fans turned out. I thought the togetherness and the work ethic from all the squad was first class.

"We certainly weathered the storm for ten minutes. It was incredible. They popped it round the pitch and showed their quality – but we had a good base to work from, of the units working well together.

"The performance gives me a headache moving towards Wycombe now because I think every player out there – including the two young kids – did well. I am really pleased with their development."
