MARTIN BROWN - York’s most successful amateur golfer of the last decade - will bid for a great eight tomorrow.

That’s when the first shots will be fired in the York Union of Golf Clubs’ amateur championship at The Oaks Golf Club in Aughton.

Pike Hills GC ace Brown has an eighth amateur crown in his sights and he should have the clearest idea of what is required as he is the last man out.

He forms the final three-ball alongside last year’s victor, Damon Coulson of Fulford GC, and Sandburn Hall’s Rob Heath.

Brown’s last amateur ascent was in 2013, while his first was in 2004.

In between then, Brown surged to a five-year sequence of title triumphs from 2007 and 2011 in a run not seen since the early days of the championship when it was dominated by 11-times winner C E Powell.

Seven-time winner Brown goes into tomorrow’s tournament in solid form. He recently qualified for the prestigious Brabazon Trophy - the English men’s amateur strokeplay championship - to be played at Hollinwell GC in Notting - hamshire at the end of June.

The Pike Hills man defied atrocious weather conditions to card a two-over-par 73 in the Northern qualifier at Clitheroe GC.

Besides the amateur title, The Oaks will also host the Seward Trophy junior championship tomorrow
