RISING City of York Athletic Club sprint star Tom Somers could be facing a four-month spell on the sidelines.

The 17-year-old Yearsley runner is recovering after an operation on the hamstring injury that forced him out of the Sainsbury’s British Indoor Championships in Sheffield last month.

The Queen Ethelburga’s student was aiming to make a major impact outdoors this summer having impressed indoors since the turn of the year.

However, Somers pulled up 40 metres into the semi-final in Sheffield, with an MRI scan revealing a hamstring tear.

City of York coach Geoff Barraclough said: “I think we are looking at four months before he is able to do full training.

“I don’t think there will be anything for him this season. It is one of those nasty things."
