YETTON Trophy holders York Indoor Bowls Club are still in the quest to retain their crown but only just after edging Scarborough 81-80 after an extra end.

The game had been close throughout. York led 18-17 after five ends and widened the gap to 46-32 five ends later.

But Scarborough slowly clawed the deficit back and by the 18th end only two shots separated the teams.

At home, Joan Jackson, June Clayton, Helen Wood and Carol Instone scored threes on the 12th and 13th ends to lead 14-7 and then a four on the 16th to move to 18-11 up.

Ahead 20-12 at the last end, they dropped a four.

That was countered away as Carol Banks, Lynda Parker, Zoe Eagles and Helen Walker, who had a magnificent six on the 12th end, notched a four on the last to triumph 35-16.

Hayley Macdonald, Maureen Walker, Betty Richardson and Sue Allen’s home rink led 13-7 after 11 ends. But by the 16th they trailed 17-13 and were eventually toppled 20-15.

The last rink to finish was in Scarborough, where Dot Kennelly, Sheila Turpin, Sue Tomlinson and Linda Harrison had a tough afternoon but crucially picked up a four on the 20th end to bring their score to 27-10.

A dropped single moved the game into an extra end and it was Harrison’s rink who were drawn to play it.

Kennelly put one close to the jack and it stayed there with the skips to play their woods.

The Scarborough skip just missed with her first wood, as did Harrison. The home leader then missed by a whisker leaving York to advance to a last 32 duel against Redcar.

• PROGRESS continued for York in the Mason Trophy after both rinks won in their match against North Cave with momentum held right through to an overall 58-27 success.

At home, Joan Jackson, Carol Banks, Melanie Brooke and Carol Instone showed their supremacy in the first five ends when they led 11-0. That underpinned a 32-11 win.

Away, Dot Kennelly, Maureen Walker, Helen Walker and Linda Harrison were also in good form. After levelling at 5-5 with a three on the fifth end they never looked back to win 26-16, including a six on the 18th end, and earning a tie against Harrogate in the next round.

• YORK IBC 'A' lost their second Yorkshire Over-55s League division one game on the spin after crashing 77-65 to Hornsea and picking up a scant reward of just three points.

At home, Ray Calpin, Malcolm Harrison, Eric Hodgson and Geoff Walker were the only winning rink coming back from 7-6 down to win 18-15.

Dave Dale, Barry Walker, Andy Humphreys and Graham Instone picked up a six on the fourth end to take a 6-5 lead but it was downhill from then on to crash 22-10.

With the home rinks starting earlier than those away the three shots picked up on Walker’s last end brought the aggregate score to within seven shots at 68-61.

Alan Vowles, Chris Bishop, Phil Parsons and Graham Brooke led 16-5 with eight ends to play and Dudley Williams, Gordon Walker, Tex Stevens and Malcolm Harrison had gone from 15-9 down to 16-16 with four ends to play. The latter though ran out of steam and lost 23-20 whilwe Brooke's team ceded even of the last eight ends to draw 17-17.
