HOLGATE CLUBBERS became the first team to win the Super 7 three years in a row after beating 7 Deadly Sinners in the final at Railway Institute.

Clubbers had to dig deep in both the semi-final and final and also overcome Top Cops in an elimination semi to reach the last four.

7 Deadly Sinners produced some marvellous performances against the odds to reach the final with 6-2 away wins at Poppies, in the elimination semi, and Railway Locos in the qualifying semi.

It was only in the closing ends of the final that Clubbers took control to run out 8-0 winners, a scoreline which belies a very hard fought contest.

In the pairs, Don Fentiman and Mick Crowe led the way for Clubbers and were 11-4 up at the changeover but, three ends later, Lynne Tattersall and Pauline Cooper were back to 10-11 before finally going down 17-13.

In the other pairs, Alex Tattersall and Kevin Liddell were in front at half-way 10-6 against Clubbers’ John Crowe and Gary Lewington but seven shots in two ends for Clubbers enabled them to go away to win, again 17-13.

The remaining triples was very tight between Sinners’ Gina Newton, June Ogden and Brian Gray against Clubbers’ Alan Phillips, Stuart Smith and Steve Lea.

Clubbers were never behind in this game but, after seven of the 15 ends, the score was 6-6 before a five in the tenth allowed the Clubbers’ trio to go on to win 15-12.

Clubbers’ semi-final against Haxby Road Rockets at Clarence Gardens was poised to go to a sudden-death play-off - even though both their pairs had won - as Phillips, Smith and Lea were trailing 18-8 to the Rockets ranks of Ray Robinson, John Stroughair and Kev Butler.

They looked to have given their team the aggregate for a 4-4 tie, but the Clubbers’ triple scored an excellent three shots in the 16th and last end to clinch a place in the final.
