CLARENCE Ladies snatched the 2014 Clarence Gardens Handicap Double Triples with a dramatic win over Haxby Road in the final round of matches in the end of season competition.

The Ladies went into the decider four points behind Haxby Road, who required just two of the six points available from winning one of the two triples - or even just a tie in one of the games depending on the aggregate - as the ladies had a 17 shot deficit as well as the four points.

Haxby Road made up the two shots start per triple they had to concede after five of the eight ends and looked well placed with Ray Boyes, Steve Cain and Kev Butler 14-10 up at 13 ends against Margaret Sempers, June Ogden and Paul Cooper, only for the ladies trio to turn the match on its head with 14 unanswered shots in the last five ends for a 24-14 triumph.

The other triples was a see-saw battle between Gina Newton, Lynne Tattersall and Maureen Walker and Mick Clark, Ron Newton and John Straughair with fortunes changing frequently.

Stroughair’s three battled back from 8-13 to 13 all with two ends to play but Walker’s team held their nerve and single shots on each of the last two ends clinched a remarkable 6-0 win and the Brian Bunce Trophy.
