A SIXTH-FORMER has experienced life in university research for the first time after securing an internship.

Beth Molloy thought she had lost out on her summer application for funding to undertake work experience in a science lab, until she chased up the organisers and was told she could have the grant if she secured her own placement.

Within 24 hours she had received an offer from Leeds University to work in the Endothelial Cell Biology Unit in the Molecular and Cellular Biology department. She learnt how to culture, thaw and look after cells from two lines: a breast cancer line and a prostate cancer line.

Kirsten Cooper, Bootham School head of Physics, said: “This has been an amazing experience and will hopefully help towards her application to study Natural Science at Cambridge.”
