A WOMAN who owns a company selling unique and handmade rugs says it is a “dream come true” to relocate her business to York.

Emma Mellor launched the business, The Handmade Rug Company, 18 months ago in the North Yorkshire village of Hutton-le-Hole. But she has now moved the business to York, after finding the “ideal” premises in High Petergate, which used to be the Viking Loom craft shop.

The 45-year-old mother-of-two is looking forward to opening her new shop for the first time today, at 11am.

She said: “I am very excited about opening. It’s like a dream come true. I wanted to find a shop that is in an ideal location for this business. It is right next to the Minster.

“I have been looking for premises in York for a while. York is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. When it’s something like oriental rugs, it has to be the right location.”

The business offers a unique selection of hand picked rugs, including traditional, modern, vintage and oriental. It sells rugs from all over the world, with one of a kind pieces from Morocco, Nepal, Turkey and Afghanistan.

Ms Mellor, who lives in York, is confident the shop will be a success.

York Press:

She said: “People appreciate beautiful things. I think people are really supportive of independent shops at the moment. York has got so many wonderful independent shops.”

She added: “I do think there is a need for this type of business in York. There’s nothing else like it in the city.

“Lots of people enjoy decorating their homes and like to have beautiful things around them. Rugs are not only unique pieces of art, they’re also something you can leave behind. They’re an heirloom. They get better with age.”

Ms Mellor has worked with rugs for the past 11 years.

“I have a lot of experience in this industry,” she said. “I have always had an attachment, sort of an obsession with textiles and materials. It was a natural gravitation towards rugs. Each one is unique, you can find something decorative in each piece. It’s like a piece of jewellery, you can fall in love with them immediately.”

The Handmade Rug Company offers a home viewing service, so customers have the chance to see rugs in their homes before deciding whether to buy them.

From 11am today. The business will open seven days a week.
