A 31-year-old man travelled from Bristol to York for a case that was thrown out because police had not provided anyone with details of the allegations against him.
British Transport Police ordered Furkan Tunc, of Crow Lane, Henbury, Bristol, to appear before York Magistrates Court on a charge of travelling from London Kings Cross to York without paying his fare.
But though he turned up at court, neither he, nor the court, nor the Crown Prosecution Service, who had been asked to prosecute the case, had any witness statements, details of the allegations or other essential paperwork.
Magistrates refused to adjourn the case and as the CPS had no evidence, the case was withdrawn.
It was the first time the case had been before the court.
