A WOMAN was rescued from the River Ouse in York early today.

North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said firefighters were sent to the river near Skeldergate Bridge at 1.40am to assist police after a report of a woman in the water.

The woman was rescued from the river by the fire service rescue boat and handed over to police and ambulance crews with no obvious injury, said a spokesman.

North Yorkshire Police said the force was called by a member of the public, who said the woman had fallen in the river just downstream of Skeldergate Bridge and was hanging on to the embankment.

A spokeswoman said the woman, who had been drinking, was taken by ambulance to accident and emergency for a precautionary check-up.
