VANDALS have torn the Union Flag from a memorial to some of Britain's Second World War heroes.

The flag was cut down from the flagpole beside a memorial in Pocklington.

Darran Walker discovered the damage at 12.30pm on Sunday, while visiting from York.

York Press:

Writing in the Pocklington facebook group on Monday, he said he had spoken with the town clerk, and said: "It would seem that sadly my suspicions regarding the damaged Union Flag at the memorial were correct and that the flag was deliberately cut down in an act of vandalism, with the perpetrators leaving it strewn across the floor.

"Please keep your eyes and ears open so that these disgusting individuals can be brought to justice. Thank you."

The memorial is set back from the street in gardens on the corner of Grape Lane and Scaife Garth.

Town clerk Gordon Scaife told The Press the flag had been cut down but was not damaged, so could be put back up. He said broken bottles and glasses had been found nearby but he did not know why the memorial had been targeted.
