AN eight-year-old boy suffered a fractured skull when he came off his scooter on his way to a shop in York.

Kieran Turner, a pupil at Robert Wilkinson Primary Academy, fell in Strensall on Tuesday.

He is now recovering at home and his mother Claire and dad Lee, of Fossview Close, are thanking the passers-by who helped rescue him.

Claire said: "Bless him, he wanted to go to the shop for some sausage rolls, and we didn't have enough to go round. He offered to go for us on his electric scooter. I gave him some money and off he went.

"About 15 minutes later, he hadn't returned. I wondered where he had got to, and there was a knock on the door. A man in work clothes asked if I was Mrs Turner, and said my son was with his step-son. I felt physically sick."

She raced to find Kieran, who was starting to come round and in tears.

Claire said: "He was out cold, but came round and started being sick. I ran to where he was which was just over the other side of the foot bridge. When I got there, he was very delirious, holding his head, crying, and saying his head hurt.

"I said thanks to the guy, but didn't get his details or name. When we got home, Kieran just started throwing up and was laying on the floor trying to go to sleep, so I rang an ambulance and we went to A&E.

"They did a CT scan and found a fracture and a haematoma, so we were taken by ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary."

Further tests showed doctors did not need to operate on Kieran's injury, but he had to remain in hospital for observation. He is now recovering at home, and Claire said she wanted to thank the men who stopped to help him.

She said: "He's doing really well. He's been very lucky, but he's back at home now, just very sore and got to keep a very close eye on him. I was so relieved. He had to stay in for a couple of days for observation, and we have to keep an eye on him.

"I'm still shocked and emotional, and tired. We're just counting our lucky stars because we've been very lucky. He didn't remember much at first, but it's starting to come back. He remembers he was going to the shop for sausage rolls, then remembers seeing the guy who helped him. He doesn't remember going in the ambulance, but I took a picture to show him.

"I really want to say a massive thank you to the guys who helped. I don't know how long he'd laid there, but it's a busy spot, I don't know if anyone else saw him and just drove past.

"These guys were going in the opposite direction from where Kieran was laid out, but still stopped to help him, when they could've just kept going. They didn't give me their names. I've had a message on Facebook from someone who said it was their partner and son, so I'm going to arrange to meet up with them properly and say thanks - I definitely owe them a few beers."
