A NORTH Yorkshire MP says it is "unacceptable" his constituents have had to deal with repeated flooding.

Nigel Adams, MP for Selby and Ainsty, visited flood victims in Tockwith last week, to see the impact of the flooding over the weekend of August 22, which also affected villages including Bolton Percy, Saxton and the centre of Tadcaster.

In Tockwith, water collected in the road in front of six homes and came in through the walls and the front doors. Residents told Mr Adams their homes had not flooded in the past, and they believed changes had been made to drainage in the area to cause the deep water to accumulate every time there is heavy rain.

Leila Haley, who lives in Tockwith, said: "Most of us can’t afford to claim on the insurance again. It means anything that is damaged we have to replace ourselves – carpets, curtains, electrical goods, everything."

Following the flooding, Mr Adams raised the issue with North Yorkshire County Council and has been told a full assessment into the repeated flooding is now underway.

Mr Adams said: "It is unacceptable that people should live in fear every time heavy rain is forecast.

"There are a few villages which flood whenever there is heavy rain. It is unacceptable that people should suffer repeated flooding in this way. Almost as soon as they have completed repairs after one event, they are flooded again.

"In some cases they have to move out while the house is dried out and plaster replaced. If the village did not flood in the past it should not do so now. I have spoken with North Yorkshire County Council and asked them to investigate the problems in Tockwith and have been assured that a survey will be taken using remote control cameras in the drainage culverts.

"I am hopeful that a solution can be in place for Tockwith in the near future."
