ARTISANS were out in force as York's monthly Farmers Market celebrated food from local suppliers.

Yorkshire producers joining the market for the first time this month included award-winning pie specialist The Hull Pie, known for its ‘S’Rolls’ sausage rolls and flavoursome pies.

Regulars include the Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil, which produces oils, dressings and mayonnaise using seed grown on the chalky soil of the Yorkshire Wolds, and York-based potter Jane Schaffer.

Reenactor Gary Goldthorpe dressed in his finest outfit on Friday to help share information about the Farmers' Market, Shambles Market and traders.

Fresh goods sold at the Farmers' Market are grown, reared, caught, brewed, pickled, baked, smoked or processed by the stallholder within a 40-mile radius of York.

Local produce includes meat, eggs, bread and oils, as well as pottery and woollen gifts, and joins the city’s regular market on the last Friday of every month.

Chris Price, city centre and markets manager, at Make It York, said: ‘York and Yorkshire has some of the best food producers in the country and the food on offer at Shambles Market is as fresh as you can get it outside of growing or making it yourself; including fish caught that morning off Yorkshire’s coastline and freshly-baked bread made from organic grain flour. We’re delighted to welcome such a variety of quality local artisans this month."
