STONEGATE in York was cordoned off after a lorry crashed into a building.

A delivery lorry collided with the Pyramid Gallery, having mounted the pavement to get round a parked car, leaving a pile of rubble on the ground.

It had become wedged into the first floor of the listed National Trust property.

The lorry was carefully reversed away from the building at about 11.45pm, more than two hours after the crash.

It was allowed to move after structural engineers from City of York Council and the National Trust put scaffolding under the ledge the lorry had crashed into to secure the structure of the building.

Police and fire fighters were called to the scene when the incident happened at 9.30am. A crowd of people gathered to watch, after the street was cordoned off.

Fi Macfarlane, the assistant manager of the Pyramid Gallery, said she had come out of Starbucks after hearng the collision to see the lorry wedged into the 15th Century building.

She said: "The street is wide enough but someone was parked on the otherside. The wagon mounted the pavement and inserted the building."

Items of Glass artwork hanging precariously above the cracked window seat are worth £600 each, she said.

Ms Macfarlane, pictured below right with co-worker Ruth Claydon, added: "We're hoping it's not closed long. It's the holiday weekend and it's a real loss for business. But no-one is hurt so it could be so much worse."
