A RETIRED trucker has been recognised for his selfless acts which have saved countless lives.

David Barber, 64, has donated blood 100 times since he turned 21 in 1972.

The Woodthorpe dad-of-two, who has given donations during various sessions all over York, said: "I was 21 when I started and decided it was a worthwhile thing to do and carried on with it ever since.

"When I started you could only donate twice a year but it was changed to three times and now you're able to donate four times a year."

Mr Barber was invited to a ceremony at Hazlewood Castle, near Tadcaster, last month where he met members of the public whose lives have been saved by blood donors.

He was also presented with a certificate to honour his 100 donations.

"There are people alive today that wouldn't be alive without blood donors and I've been able to meet them," he added.
