York St John University degree results - Day 3

Over the three days, hundreds of students graduated in five degree ceremonies, collecting their degrees from the university’s chancellor, the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, or the vice chancellor, Prof David Fleming, in front of an audience of graduands, their families and friends.

Also joining those graduating on stage throughout the course of the three days of ceremonies were notable figures collecting honorary degrees.

They included University of York Professor Baroness Haleh Afshar, and one of the nation’s leading civil liberties campaigners, Shami Chakrabarti, director of Liberty.

Boxer Nicola Adams, who won Olympic gold at London 2012, was also awarded an honorary degree but was not able to attend the ceremony.

In addition London 7/7 bombings survivor and paralympic athlete Martine Wright, was awarded a doctor of health sciences in recognition of her remarkable contribution to sport in the face of adversity.

Martine lost both legs in the 7/7 terrorist attacks on the London underground, when she was sitting only metres away from the bomber. She has since rebuilt her life and became a member of the British 2012 Paralympic volleyball team.

Prof David Fleming, said he was sure that graduates would be inspired by the contributions of all of the honorary doctorate recipients.
